I am honored to be elected and to serve as your new Maryland Society of Radiologic Technologists President. We had a wonderful Annual Meeting this past weekend in rainy Ocean City, Maryland, but that did not dampen our spirits. We had 4 vendors participating this year, so a big shout out to ExpressCare, Towson University, Johns Hopkins Medicine, and CCBC’s Medical Imaging programs. Our speakers delivered presentations on a plethora of brilliant topics, where everyone learned a lot. Thank you speakers and vendors!
I have been attending the MSRT Annual Meeting for over 10 years with my 2nd year students from the Community College of Baltimore County. I finally decided to become a Board member 2 years ago, and was elected as Vice President. With my knowledge of social media, I was able to redesign the website and create MSRT accounts in Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter. I also set up a Google Voice account, so now you may call or text the MSRT for any reason! In addition, I created a new logo and slogan for the MSRT, all designed to update your professional society for a more modern look and feel.
Congratulations to all Board members who were elected at our Business Meeting this past Saturday! We have a very strong Board membership and I look forward to working with everyone as your MSRT President. Here is a look at the MSRT happenings since last year:
The MSRT sponsored its annual Registry Review seminar at Anne Arundel Community College on April 4-5, 2016, for 2nd year students getting ready to sit for their big exam. We had to say good-bye to Dr. Bill Mulkey; he is retiring and that was his last seminar. We are going to try to find someone to step into his very large shoes.
The MSRT moved to online membership payment through Big Tent in June 2016. This means that there will be no mailing of renewal notices, but there are automatic renewal notices through email. We accept membership both through the website and by paper, but the website allows us to run easy reports as well as not have to spend so much time managing the renewals. You may have received a postcard explaining this. We will continue to use the mail for special items though.
Maryland represented at the annual ASRT Educational Symposium and Annual Governance/House of Delegates meeting in Las Vegas June 23-26, 2016. The two students from Maryland selected to participate in the ASRT Student Leadership Development Program were Sarah Rowles from CCBC and Mary Rodriquez from Prince George’s Community College. Kristin Mitas, Benjamin Enyinnaya, and Debbie Lam attended the meetings as well.
We have a new Executive Secretary! Please welcome Amanda White who came on board in August 2016. Ellie Tracey retired in 2015 after many, many years of service to the MSRT. Best of luck, Ellie!
The MSRT continues to grow, and here is just a sample of goals we are working on for this year:
MSRT’s 2017 Annual Meeting: We are accepting speaker applications already! If you know of someone, pass this message on. We are also looking into different options for next year’s conference, so continue to monitor our website for updates.
2017 Registry Review Seminar: We will be looking for presenters who will walk through content that will be useful for our students to refresh for the big exam.
Restart our districts: Remember those? I have had a few people interested in doing this, which is very exciting. CCBC’s new Health Professions building is being built in 2018, and would a wonderful site in which to hold Greater Baltimore events.
Restart the Student Scholarship fund: I tried to start a Booster fund with an adorable t-shirt for children, but the campaign failed since only 3 people placed orders. If anyone knows of any graphic artists who would donate a design to try this again, please let us know!
Start up Committees again: We need to build our Health Policy committee for advocating for our professions. We also need help with committees for the annual meeting and to start an MSRT newsletter. If you do not have a lot of time to donate to the MSRT, there are plenty of smaller tasks which mean so much to the MSRT. Please contact us for more information and see our Committees page.
President’s Blog: I will be writing blog entries now and again. And since I monitor our website, I will be instantly available to answer all of your questions. Please do not hesitate to contact me or anyone else in the MSRT!
Increase our online Store: Those who attended the 2016 Annual Meeting got a preview of items we will have on sale on our online Store. All proceeds go to the MSRT. A big Thank You to Stacy DiBartolomeo for running our gift booth and for making beautiful pieces of jewelry and crafts. Thank You also to Rachel Ballantine for donating stunning hand-painted RT(R) wineglasses!
Thank you to all of our members who contribute to our state affiliate of the ASRT! Without your help, we would have no MSRT. There have been a lot of changes going on, but the quality with which medical imaging technologists deliver patient care will never be second best! We only exist to uphold the high standards of our profession. As our new logo says: See What’s Inside Your Profession…
Respectfully yours, Erin Myers, MA, RT(R), CNMT MSRT President
